Since the former Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi has recently died in his hometown of Sirte, Italian officials want to expediently remove the migrants from the island and send them back across the sea to Libya. The rationale is that their dictator is dead, and thus the environment in Libya is safe; however, it is not clear whether or not Libya is stable, considering that there could be infighting amongst the rebel groups. “Italian official wants migrants deported” by UPI:
An Italian official said he wants undocumented Libyan migrants living in Italy to be deported.
Umberto Bossi, the leader of Italy’s regionalist Northern League party, said illegal immigrants from Libya should be sent home after former dictator Moammar Gaddafi was killed Thursday, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
“Now [Italy] can send the illegal Libyan immigrants back home,” Bossi said.
More than 50,000 migrants have arrived in Italy from Libya and Tunisia since January.
