Debate: Fortress Europe, Migration, and Lampedusa

Finally, France 24 has a good debate regarding Lampedusa, migration, and the European Union. Catch part 1 and part 2 here.

Key topics/points discussed in the debate:

  • Frontex, in the third quarter of 2011, reported that 38,000 migrant were detected crossing into Europe during that year;
  • The number of annual migrants to Europe in 2011 compared to years prior to the ‘Arab Spring’;
  • The story and rules of the Schengen Agreement;
  • Sarkozy’s speech on immigration and rival parties’ response;
  • Systemic failures and mutual distrust between countries in the Schengen region;
  • Rise of populist parties in Europe;
  • Greece’s lax control of its borders;
  • Renegotiating Schengen;
  • Question of European solidarity, which is being undermined when European countries act independently and make deals with countries outside the Schengen region. This could possibly because they do not feel very confident in the Schengen system;
  • Euro-crisis parallels the immigration issue: the problem is that of common rules and trust;
  • Deals were made between European countries and dictatorships in North Africa in order to curb migration;
