Asylum Claims Up in the West

“Arab Spring helps push asylum claims up in the West,” by Stephanie Nebehay, posted in Ottowa Citizen:

The Arab Spring helped push up the number of people seeking asylum in the West by 20 per cent last year, with record numbers fleeing conflicts in Libya, Syria and Ivory Coast, the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday.

A total of 441,300 asylum claims were registered in 44 industrialized countries in 2011 compared with 368,000 the previous year, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said. Afghans formed the biggest group, followed by Chinese and Iraqis.
