Italy welcomes Migrants but EU needs Reform

“Premier Letta, Italy welcoming migrants but EU needs change,” from ANSAmed:

Italy is doing its best to welcome migrants fleeing war and poverty but the EU needs to change its stance on immigration, Italian Premier Enrico Letta said on Monday, one day after six Egyptians drowned just a few metres away from a beach near Catania, Sicily.

Speaking during a visit to Baku, Azerbaijan, Letta said ‘Italy never refused to welcome (migrants) but wants the EU to confront this issue on a different level as it cannot be tackled in a chance way’. The premier expressed sorrow for the migrants who died off Catania and stressed that ‘Italy is a welcoming country, as demonstrated a week ago when we accepted migrants who had been refused by Malta’. However, he added, the phenomenon of immigration ‘is tragically structural and a different approach is needed and 10 days ago we decided with Greek President Samaras to make changing migration policies a central issue ahead of the Greek and Italian semesters of presidency’…
