Italian President Calls for Reform in Asylum Policies

The immigrants who are continuing to land on Italy’s coast aren’t ‘legal or illegal’ but rather ‘refugees’ fleeing hunger and war, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has said after a migrant-boat shipwreck that took place last week off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa in which as many as 363 people are feared dead and for which rescue efforts are still ongoing. And the Italian government quickly responded on Monday announcing it will revise asylum laws. EU home affairs ministers on Tuesday will focus on the immigration emergency in the wake of the Lampedusa shipwreck with Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano ready to present Italy’s requests – often snubbed by northern members – and call for Europe’s help. The boat was thought to have been carrying more than 500 migrants, mostly Eritreans and Somalis, when it went down last Thursday. European Commission President Jose’ Manuel Barroso will travel to Lampedusa on Wednesday to see the tragedy with his own eyes and evaluate what ‘we can do together’ to resolve the situation.
