Council of Europe Critisizes Greece for Migrant Conditions

“Council of Europe slams Greece on migrant treatment,” from ANSAmed:

Migrants are held in ”unacceptable” conditions in police stations across Greece and conditions in ‘pre-departure centers’ are only slightly better, according to a report by the Committee for the Prevention of Torture of the Council of Europe. The report is based on data collected during a visit in April 2013 and shows that a high number of migrants suffered racism and maltreatment at the hands of the police. Several pages in the report describe the country’s police stations, where undocumented migrants as well as Greek citizens arrested or already sentenced spend as much as 10 months in fetid cells where they are at high risk of disease, cannot wash themselves, there is not enough food and the inmates often sleep on the floor…
